M38A1 Clutch Linkage

This isn't directly about an M series but might be related. I have a 1977 CJ7. I have had this thing for 34 years but today on my way home from a drive the clutch rod, (between the bell crank and clutch release lever) fell off. Made quite a big noise bouncing along the bottom of the jeep.
My question is does the M38A1 ever convert to the modern, under dash clutch linkage or does it retain the older flat fender clutch arrangement for the whole range of its life as a military vehicle.

The A1 remains like the 81" wheelbase CJ5 thru the end of production in 1972.

Thanks,
1972 is also when they seem to have redesigned the clutch linkage, must be about the time AMC bought them out.

The year 1972 marked AMC's takeover, the change to the AMC 232 six in the CJ5 and CJ6 and the lengthening of the CJ5/6 to fit AMC's longer six.
