setting timing on a 68 m38a1

have a 68 m38 wont start cannot get timing set is the oil pump shaft geared to the pump cannot turn shaft to aline distributor does anyone have any knowledge on this ty

Pull out your copies of TM 9-8014 and TM 9-8015-1. Read all about oil pump installation relative to the crank and cam position. Read about distributor installation and what affect improper oil pump alignment has.
You can download these manuals in PDF format free on our downloads page.
Cam drives oil pump thru helical gear sets. Oil pump drives distributor thru distributor's male tang and the oil pump's female tang receptacle.

wired jeep as to diagram on download 1342 and it backfires as if wired wrong still no start any suggestions

I would suggest you spend a little time in the manuals I listed above so you can get a better understanding how it all works then you can probably give us a better description of how you set the distributor up. It also helps to give us more info of how you reached this point. For example: It was running fine and suddenly quit. Or: It was just rebuilt and this is my first attempt at starting it. Or: It was running poorly so I pulled the distributor and can't get her back in correctly.
