m 38 rear seat in a m38 a1
Is a M 38 rear seat the same as a m38 a1 rear seat? Will it fit and look the same? There are some for sale on the G503 site. Thanks for the help. Bye the way, I got the m38a1 running this weekend
, and drove it around the farm. Runs great, steering and shifting are tight. Speedometer has 27,000+ miles. Is that common or could it be added. !!!! Now for the multitude of little things to fix.

They are the same design - will fit either the M38 or M38A1. The milage could be the original miles on the vehicle but there is no way of knowing for sure, the speedo could have been changed. One way of guessing the miles on a vehicle is to look at other parts and systems to gauge the amount of wear and thus the potential miles - a common practice when shopping for a used car. Condition of the clutch and brake pedals for example. But with a 60 year old vehicle, lots of parts could have been replaced.

With absolutely no available records of servicing it is absolutely impossible to confirm originality of the speedometer. This is why most states no longer require statements of mileage on older vehicles on title applications because such statements and records are not verifiable and therefore useless.
If you had the military service records for the jeep the speedo replacements would have been well documented and computed mileages would have been simple. But uncle doesn't share those records with the public.
I have simply ignored speedo readings on MV's when buying because I know they are a totally unreliable source of aging information for the MV.
