Question on rear axle shaft nut

Now that my M38 rear axle housing is painted and the new bearings have been pressed onto the shafts, its time to put everything back together. My question is related to putting the nut back on the shaft. TM9-8012 says "Install the axle shaft washer and axle nut on the axle shaft. Tighten the nut and secure in position with 1/8 X 1 1/2 Cotter pin." I have another source that says to tighten the nut to 150 ft. pounds, and a Chilton manual that says 250 foot pounds. So if anyone could clarify this step I would appreciate it.

150 foot-pounds sounds right, but I can't back that up with any documentation, nor did a search on this forum produce any results. I found this thread over on G503: http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=120416 The retorqueing after short service seems like a good idea, especially if the tapers aren't in great condition.

Hello John,

Looks like I will have to avoid reading your posts from now on. That's one of the most annoying and distracting avatars I have ever seen. It's right up there with Pete's Eyeball roller and Raymond's bouncing boobs.

Make sure you install the hub first and then slide the key in facing the right way, then the washer and nut. 150 Ft Lbs is the correct torque and yes it should be rechecked after a short run-in.
