So Iinstalling the 1954 directional light upgrade

Post by Deadguy »

And I have a few questions. The directions are a little vague, and I'm not sure if I need to install the fuses on my M38A1. It might just be on the 10 ton truck. The other thing, is what specifically does the rear blackout light do? It has a power line going to it. Is it just for the brakes? Maybe Wes knows (I downloaded his instillation instructions-thanks Wes!)

The basic kit instructions (both early and late type) deal with a standard GI installation. Since you remove the original right tail light assy which had the BO Stop funtion in it the military must retain the BO Stop function so they move wire # 23 from the original right tail light assy to the new little BO Stop lamp. This is not the same as the front marker lamp. It uses a different symbol in the lens.

They then install a new left tail light assy in the right hole and add wires 21 and 22 across to it. This gives you a red tail and a red stop lamp on both sides and moves the BO stop function from the original right light assy to the new small light assy.

If you are installing the early turn signal system with the large relay box then you must also use the wiring diagram from that kit drawing # F7019172.

If you are installing the later transistorized kit I use the M151 turn signal wiring diagram. http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules/gall ... .sized.jpg

Neither reference any fuse.

Which are you installing?

I'm installing the early version. It looks like it was for several vehicles, and some of the parts are not needed on my M38A1.
If I got a new, front BO light, is that sufficient for that small rear light, or do I need a different one?

For accuracy you need the correct lens. They (lens only) are dirt cheap from Saturn Surplus. Pick up a cheap used front marker and clean it up and add the correct lens.
