Gas tank Spout/Strainer

Hello to All - I have a 1953 M38A1 which was brought back to life by a good restoration job, but, I have a fuel question. Mine has a wide mouth fuel spout. I purchased a fuel strainer which was supposed to be for the wide mouth. Turns out that the strainer is too small. It will drop into the tank if I turn it loose. The person who I purchased the strainer from says the spout should have a shelf at the bottom before it enters the tank. Is that true? If so, mine doesn't have a shelf....Can one be made for the tank? Where does it go?
As always, thanks for your knowledge base.

The original tanks had a lip or shelf the strainer rested on. Repros from MD JUAN ( strikes again) didn't have the lip. If you can find a rusted out tank with a good filler neck, you can cut out yours and spot weld a solder in the original to fix the problem. You can also fit it to the side hole better. A earlier flat fender M38 tank is not the same as the A1. It had a extendable filler tube with the strainer soldered into it. Lots of work for a strainer huh? John
Thanks

Hello John and thanks for your information. I don't know what kind of spout the original restorer used, but, yes it would be a lot of work to add the attachhment for the strainer...
I may just forget it ........Thanks again.

Here are the photos I found, it is difficult to take a photo of the bracket while in the tank.
I thought the latest revision of the repro tanks have the fuel strainer bracket. At least for the M38.

Nice pictures, but I think I saw some dirt-----

, and that tank needs to be changed out for a repro doesn't it?

I have a repo M38 tank and a original. The fuel strainer from the original will not fit in the repo. The bracket is too small in diameter.

You are correct, the original M38 strainer doesn't fit the repro at first. I did some tweeking and got it to go. Only took about two hours. I never got to try the repro strainer though, it is still on back order. I have one original and one repro tank. Believe it or not, the repro is much heavier and thicker. If it was 1/4 inch less tall, I'd really like it. Not so for the M38A1 tank I got. Wow, must have been a early one. Sold it for a loss and bought a NOS tank for 100 bucks less------

Duh! Haven't seen a new tank since. John
