Is there a way to date an M38 by body differences?

Is there anyway to date my M38 by the different body features, or were all M38's pretty much identical? Someone removed all the data plates from mine, probably in preparation for repainting. So now I have a body with absolutely no way to identify it and the DMV has had to assign a VIN based on the engine number, but it's a transplanted inline 6 from a Jeep Wagon. So I have no clue what year it is from. All I know is it's an M38, complete with Army green paint under the later black paint, but no tags or plates anywhere.

So, if there are certain features of M38's that changed a bit during '50, '51 and '52, could I perhaps tell what year it is?

Buy Ryan Miller's book - M38 Reference Guide - a pic of the book and ordering information is located on the main page of this website. Contains information on changes to the M38 during production and pics of modified parts and systems. A very good item to have as well as copies of the Army maintenance manuals (available as downloads in the "Downloads" section of this website).

The book is great to have. Ryan along with a lot of help from a few of us spent several years putting it together. A lot of the info in it came from the survey forms so please do not neglect the submission of a survey form for your M38 but also do buy the book. It's sale supports this web site and supports on going research thru personally owned Willys archival data.
