were they grinded off or just never there, and do you guys think a technique like this could work if they once existed. i was taking a criminal justice lab class over the summer and remembered how they recovered serials from guns that had the numbers grinded off.

Give it s shot. According to the site, it worked on that 302 in the Camaro.

I was still green when i had my L-134 block decked. I had
no idea that they would deck out the numbers so i didn't
address it with the machinist till it was too late. Thankfully
i had written my numbers on the M-38 survey i sent to Wes
and was able to retrieve them..(another good reason to
get those surveys filled out )

It is very common for the numbers to be lost when the block is decked and yes it is possible using standard police procedures to make them readable.


You can ask the shops to try to remove as little as possible from the block deck to salvage the serial number but just in case insist they record the incoming serial number and casting number on the shop work order and if it is unreadable after the block is decked have them sign a written statement to that effect.

I had my block done a couple of years ago, the machine shop did a rub of the original serial numbers on a piece of paper. Then when they were done they put it back up on the boss and stamped through it. All was good Jim
