I've found a few things reguarding my questions here, but not the exact yes/no answers I am looking for, so here goes.

I saw where Rickg bought a water pump (offshore) from Walcks and didn't have a great experience. I'm considering ordering one from Oreilly's (a Cardone, $33, lifetime warranty) and taking my original to compare it to the replacement (by taking measurements). The pulley is different I can tell by the picture on the website. Hopefully it measures out and the old pulley will fit the shaft, because with Christmas and tax time is coming - not much money for the toys right now. Here is the link to this pump:

Has anyone tried this pump and can share? Am I wasteing my time ordering and measuring for fitment problems? What about rebuild kits - are they worth messing with? I haven't taken my spare apart, so I don't know what shape it's in - will do that after lunch. This might be a possibility also.

I've also seen a couple of comments about the Airtex fuel pumps. Wes, you said the Airtex 4032 is the correct pump for the 'A1 - here is the link to it:

But what about the Airtex 9562? It says it works on a 1955 CJ5. It costs about $20 less and has the threaded fuel and vacuum fittings. Is there a physical size problem with this pump that it won't fit with the front engine plate or something? Here is the link to it:

I have my original military pump and am planning on getting it rebuilt or doing it myself (questions will be coming on that when that time comes), but I am just trying to get the 'A1 going right now and need something that works and will be used in case of an emergency.

Your best and least expensive choice in water pump issue is rebuilding your own. It must be done carefully step by step per the manual. Especially where the press is involved. I would not purchase any other pump that I would need to move my double pulley to unless I had the opportunity to measure the length and diameter of the exposed shaft on the new pump to compare to my old pump's shaft before I buy it.


Review your operating pressure requirement in the M38A1 operator's manual TM 9-8014. It calls for 4.5 to 5.0 PSI. I know the 4032 pump has the odd steel tubes for the vacuum ports but the pressure is correct. The 9562 you list has an output pressure range of 2.5 to 3.75 not nearly enough for your stock M38A1 system.

You need to be very careful if you are going to rebuild it yourself, or change your pulley to an O'Reilly pump. The new pump's shaft is slightly smaller than the original. That combined with the fact that the hub in the pulley gets stretched out a bit once you press it on, may leave you with a less than perfect interference fit when you go to re-install it. If you do not have the proper press fit, the pulley and fan will spin off and go launching thru your radiator. Radiator repair, if it can be, will run you 4-500 today for a new core. The cost of a new pump with a correctly installed original 2 groove pulley will seem very cheap then.

Good info guys! I started to pull my spare apart today, but remembered that there is a manual for it, so I thought I would read through it first. I don't have a problem doing stuff like that myself (actually love learning what makes stuff work), so I might try it. I thought about asking the Oreilly guy that if I order the pump and it doesn't measure out right I could get a refund - what can he say, NO? Then I would just order a rebuild kit or new/rebuilt pump. I had my radiator rebuilt 12 years ago for $80 and sold my spare for $130 delivered - what a big mistake! I'd hate to have to find one these days.

I did not read the fuel pressure for the 9562 fuel pump - thanks for catching that Wes - that's why I ask first. Cheaper is not always better!

I just finished reading through the water pump rebuild instructions. It looks pretty straight forward. So what can you use to pull the impeller and pulley hub, will a regular 3 arm puller work? I have a press to reassemble it. What comes in the rebuild kit?
