My 54 A1 was converted to 12v by the PO. For the time being, I'll keep it that way, but eventually go back to 24v when the proper deal shows up for gen/reg/etc.
Right now I'm going through the 12v system, upgrading wire, cleaning it up, etc and putting in a voltmeter (the original ammeter was in the "box of extra parts" along with the other gauges). My preference is to use one of the original military voltmeters, but will one of them work with a 12v system? I'd prefer not to get a voltmeter for the 12v system and then another one later for the 24v system.

The military volt meter will work on 12 volts. You will have to remark the green arc to correspond to voltage readings between 12.5 and 14.5. You can do this remarking on the original face by dis-assembling the gauge and repainting the face plate or you can just use a range marking kit (decal type or sticky type) directly on the glass. It will look odd with the green arc so close to the left side but then you are saying it is a temporary solution. You can ascertain the reading locations by operating the jeep with the meter installed and a digital VOM test meter connected to see what the real numerical readings are and transcribe them to the gauge.
On the other hand you can buy a nice rectangular digital voltmeter that covers 0-40 volts DC and install it in a not so noticeable location under the edge of the dash, in the glove box or under the hood and you will always have a very accurate test digital volt meter installed for troubleshooting in the future.
Now that is interesting. I thought the bezel was crimped on the gage. Wes are you suggesting it is possible to disassemble the gage? I have some decent looking gages that I wouldn't mind attempting repairs but the crimped bezel stopped me cold.
I recall your suggestion from another thread about mounting a digital gauge in the glovebox. For me, that is a better option than re-marking the mil gauge. Thanks for the reminder I will need to get a voltmeter that goes to 40volts if I also want to use it on the 24v system.
