While out running around looking for some M38a1 parts, I ran across a 7-53 M38a1. Been sitting for about 25 years according to owner. It was still complete with windshield, fold down grill, 24 volt system, distributor was not waterproof one, still has the data plates plus the one behind the seat. Gas tank still had all the original hookups. Guage cluster still there. $&% even the glove box lock is still on it, and works. Bumperetts, and lifting shackels, jerry can holder w/ jerry can, spare tire carrier, and shovel holding hood. Seats frames are rusted, cushions are completely gone. Engine spun a bearing and that is why it was parked. Now the trans and transfer case shifters are locked in place. Price is $800 firm with no parts coming off it. What do you think?

How rusty (besides the seats) is it? Floors, tool box, rocker area, gas tank well and gas tank are all major areas to check - lots of $$ and work. Since it is pretty much complete, it is probably worth the $$$, but replacing the rusty areas (and/or tank) can add up quick. The engine isn't a big deal - the parts/engines are easy to find. If for nothing else, that baby is worth some major $$ parted out, but being that complete (if it has a title), I would put her back on the road.

That's where the problem comes into play. I was looking at it for parts to bring mine up to a better level. However, I'm old school when it comes to parting out something this complete. Here in Ky all you need is a sheriff's inspection and a little leg work to get a title issued. Body was not that bad rust wise. Fuel tank well had some rust around the bottom of it. Could not tell about the floors. After I asked him about it and he gave me a price, and just turned around and walked away. He said it wasn't going anywhere soon. Buried pretty deep back in the yard. Will take a bit to get it out. But it is sitting on blacktop and not dirt. Some aninal has been living in the back of it. Lots of dung in and around it. It has a cj5 hood covering the back so an animal has found refuge there.

Yeah, that's the way I am with my parts jeep - bought it for $300 with title - I would say 85% complete, engine not stuck, all 24v - straight from forestry service 15 years ago. Seats rusted away along with gas tank well and tool box floor. Even still has e brake setuo on it. It is in better shape than the one I'm restoring! Anyway, we'll see what the future holds for her - she'll probably go as a bonus with my 'A1 when I sell her and the trailers (no time soon, I don't think).

Well I'm really enjoying the work on my 53 a1. I bought a 46 and a 47 cj2a before I bought the a1. If I had known I would have passed on the 2a's and just gone after the a1. Now it looks like the thing to do is sale the 2a's and buy the parts jeep and see if it's in restorable condition. I have most everything I need for mine with the exception of the gas tank and the oem seats. Looking forward to getting it out this spring.

That seems like a great deal. To me a rust free or low rust tub is the most important thing to consider. Tons of labor involved to properly fix a rusty tub.
