I'm using this website, Service manaul TM98015-1, advice from the machine shop, and the civvy manual. Better read up on the drama about rear main seals also. I'm going with a rope rear main seal.

Hi Wil.
I'll post a picture of the rope I got with the kit. I curious if your rope looked the same. It doesn't look quite like the NOS rope and has allot of graphite on it. Sand by....
BTW, this is a victor-reinz gasket set my machinist ordered.

As far as I remember mine was coated/soaked in the same graphite substance as you described also, and had the rubber o-ring material to seal the sides of the bearing cap. I think mine was a Fel pro set I bought back in 1998.

I'm confused on the o-ring part you mention. Are you talking about the cylindrical rubber rods that slide down between the rear bearing cap and block?

Getting back to books or engine rebuild guides. What i have taken away from here is:
1) TM9-8015-1
2) Be careful about rear main seals? I am a little confused on this subject. Who makes a good seal kit - I use to use Felpro 20 plus years ago.

Your list should include any advise you get from a GOOD machine shop and I'm finding the civvy manual has tips that can assist you. Of course this website and the 'G' should be searched through, questions asked. Also read
http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Engine/Rebuild.html
I think you can go with Felpro or Victor and have no proplem with any of the seals and gaskets other than the rear-main.
For the rear main you have to decide for yourself based on the information presented in many other posts. It's kinda like the 'what oil so I use in my knuckles question' or the 'Do I need lead in my gas question'.
I'm using rope because it came with the kit and I feel it will work good enough.
I'm not the pro here - this is just what I've read. Help me out and give me some advice when your finished reading.
