Flywheel Ring Gear

While reviewing posts on this site, I saw how you can get a new ring gear installed on the flywheel using the freeze-heat method. My question is - How do you get the original one off to begin with.

large hot torch and a brass drift. working slow and even.
Considering that your ring gear is still re- usable on the flip side, best to let a local machine shop tackle it if you have reservations.

Centre pop then drill a hole [about .25-.375"] thru under the root of a tooth then one hit of a cold chisel with a 2# hammer will either split the gear right thru or the result will be that the gear will be loose enough to fall off.
Do not try to force the old one off as this can result in the flyweel being reduced in diameter [ever so slightly] so the new gear will not fit as tightly as it should.
If by chance you wish to re-use the old one & we used to do that, the old bendix starter drives would wear the ring gear in the same 2 places [4 cyl] 3 places [6 cyl] so we would heat, loosen & re-index the ring gear to flywheel to get new life from the otherwise wornout ring gear.
Be careful reversing as most ring gears only have a lead in on one side.
