Clutch noise

OK, I jumped in the M38 to take it for a run today. No problems till I started shunting around, when I select reverse the (I'm assuming throw out bearing) starts to make a low pitch wurring noise.
Any ideas why I only get this in reverse??, do you think I'm correct in assigning this noise to the clutch bearing??

Yours in puzzlement,
Dave.

Dave,

Does it make the noise only when the clutch is depressed or when you are actually in gear.

If the former: I would be you are right about the throw out bearing.

If the later, I would bet some gear problem.

Just my 2 cents!

Anyone else is free to jump in. 8)

I would say Ryan is correct. If the throw out bearing was bad it would make noise when the clutch pedal is depressed. When Transmission is put into gear and clutch pedal is released, the throw out bearing should not be turning. It should only turn when it is putting pressure on the pressure plate. Any other noise when pedal is released and transmission is in gear would come from the gears in the transmission. I think if it doesn't make noise in first or low gear, but only in reverse, I would narrow it down to the reverse idler gear. Of coarse that is speculation with out actually looking into the transmission. This is my 2 cents worth not an experts opinion.

I am currently in the process of overhauling my Transmission and transfer case. I just need to order the parts and gears.

Many thanks,
I'll investigate it further tomorrow night. As I remember its only when the clutch is depressed and in reverse.

Its the revers thing that stumps me.
I'll let you know,
Thanks,
Dave.

Check andmake sure the bolts are tight where the transmission bolts to the bell housing and where the bell housing bolts to the block. I've seen some come loose and when you pushed the clutch pedal it would actually push the transmission and bell housing apart.

Thanks Chuck,
I appreciate the reply.
funnily enough I did just that while searching for Wes's numbers, I was trying to count a 4 or 10 bolt flange. What I learnt from Wes's may pics gallery was informative, have you checked it out??
Thanks again,
Dave.
