Glass question

Hi there!

Ok I have to get some windshield glass cut and the various class installers dont have a listing for the M38A1 split 2 piece winshield. Also I don't have a piece for a pattern. I have a new repro frame and rubber seal.

So to try and make their job simpler, ruduce the chance of stuff ups and to ultimatly save me $$$ I would like to give them as much info as possable.

1. is the glass for a circa 1975 CJ5 the same area as for the M38A1? (minus the middle rubber piece of cause)

2. what is the width and hight of the windsield glass for one side of the M38A1? ( in mm or inch)

Thanks!
Phil...

If you are lucky someone will have the glass panels laying on the table and measure them for you.

If you are not the A1 parts list shows the total sheet of glass needed is 1/4" x 16" x 50".

If you lay the windshield frame on the glass shop table with the correct gasket set and these numbers any qualified glass handler can get you on the road.

Even if you have the measurement of the height and width, you still have the radius of the corners to be concerned with. It might be better to get a traced pattern of the whole panel?

phil, i could trace the glass also and send it to you if that would help.

The overall measurements with the correct radius dimension is all that's needed.

If determining a radius is new to you just use a pair of dividers or a circle scribe and match them to the arc and draw a complete circle and then measure the radius (diameter divided by2).

Well, this topic has been covered pretty well for an M38A1. Now, can anyone give me the measurements of an M38 windshield.

I am in the same boat - bought a new WS frame without glass. I could use the tracing and/or the glass dimensions including radius of the curves. Thanks in advance. dwm

This is for a 1953 M38A1.

I had a piece sitting on my shelf. I know it fit because I took the glass out myself.

Width: Between 27 5/8" and 27 11/16"
Height: Between 12 7/8" and 12 15/16"
Radius: 3''

Probably measuring to +/- 1/16" is unnecessary but that is what I measured. Rounding down to the the 1/8" is probably fine.

That's great. Thanks. I, too will do my own installing and can get the glass for Euro 5-7 per piece. Sure beats the glass shops. BTW, my 1953 M38A1 is MD58270 Delivered 9/53. Pics on page 9 of Members' Gallery. Also pictured is my 1952 MD26784 Delivered 10/52. The '53 is the Work in Progress and the '52 is a (almost) daily driver. Do you have any extra parts that are getting in your way?
Again, thanks. David Manning

53A1, Are you sure about your measurements?

Hi Wes.

I measured the glass again. I get 27 5/8" and 12 7/8".

I used a tape measure and they can be inaccurate. I have a feeling the glass was replaced at some point in the past so they may have cut it wrong.

If the numbers don't seem correct I would wait for some more responses before getting the glass cut.
