Canvas came first then vinyl. Military used the only choice during WWII, canvas. When the M38 entered production in 1950 the CJ's were still using canvas. When the A1 entered production in 1952 the same conditions existed but vinyl was gaining in popularity. Vinyl seat covers came in the A1 and by the time the M151 was on board so was vinyl.

There's nothing like vinyl to make your posterior
sweat. It's canvas for me!

I was in the Marine Corps during the 1990s. When we ordered tops for the 5-ton trucks, we never knew if we would receive canvas or vinyl. Some trucks had canvas cab covers and vinyl bed covers or the other way around. When we ordered tops for the Hummers, they always came in vinyl.
