AC FUEL PUMPS

Post by RICKG »

My M-38 MC51986 dod 01-52 has a recond L-134 MC74754.
Have downloaded TM9-1828A and Bob Westerman's fuel pump
information. As far as i can tell i should be running AC
series CU or CY. All drawings and exploded views i have
depict the pump body with the vent. Here's the deal: the jeep
came with 2 AC fuel pumps that look like the others but have the
manual lever (primer??) instead of the vent. Can i use 'em and
what should i expect..

There must be something wrong or missing on your fuel pumps with the manual handles. That pump with the manual handle still has the vent. Someone has not assembled your pumps correctly. The pump shaft has it's own hole further aft then the vent and the when a handle is installed the vent fitting is slightly modified so it can be used as both a vent and a retainer for the handle.

Interesting.. My part "C" in the exploded view has an
alum plug installed in it.

I'll see if the plug will come out w/o damaging the fitting and
try to find the other parts that are sposed to be there.
Question: was the pump with this lever setup designed for other
than the L-134?? I should also note that my intake manifold is
set-up for the dash mt primer so the fuelpump lever seems
redundant.

The fuel pump lever is for refilling the carb bowl after the jeep sets for a long while. This happened a lot in the military.

The dash mount primer was needed for starting in very cold temps and injects fuel directly into the intake.

Two entirely different purposes.

Most M series gas engines had the lever style dual pump. My M37 has one also.

The parts you need can be found in the standard Weatherhead Catalogs and the copper washer type gasket is available at auto parts stores.

Is it possible a electric fuel pump was installed, and only the vacuumn pump was needed ,so a plug was installed.

No, never had a elect fuel pump. the plug is in the vent line fitting only.

The vent port is a direct through to the crankcase so the use of an electric pump has nothing to do with the vent port.

I have seen plugs in that port put there by folks who had no idea what the port was for.
