Another hood number question.

Post by Robg »

I have a 1955 M38A1 with data plate serial number 79840. This is confirmed by the same number on the plate right side wheel well. Manufacture date of 1/55 and Ord. # DA-33-019-ORD-630. Engine serial # is 806279. I have wet sanded both sides of the hood in an attempt to lift the original number but it seems to be missing from both sides. Is there a way to get close? I saw your topic on the M-38 calculations. Does that pertain to an A1. Someone has repainted the hood, terribly, and spray painted 1" "U.S. ARMY 21364". Aren't those numbers usually 2"? Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Rob. As you can see from my jeep's details listed below, mine came along about 1600 units after yours in the serial number range. My hood number of 2A3514 is a verified number (I have the original log book). Though the hood numbers don't exactly pace the serial numbers, that should give you one good point of reference for an educated guess. :D

Rather then add to the ever growing list of fabricated hood numbers that will only make data base building tougher every year the accepted practice is to use the first two or three digits/letters of the period correct hood number and then insert the last 4 or all 5 digits of the your jeep's serial number. This keeps the playing field clean and future researchers won't have to trip over the phony numbers since it will be obvious you used your jeep's serial number.
