When running my M38 on a hot day the area around the tranny near the gas pedal gets uncomfortably hot. My heat guage reads about 160/170. Is this normal.

Yes it is. I wrapped my header pipe, and exhaust pipe back to the crossmember support with race car, fiberglass header wrap.

Wrapping works but you must keep it dry. Especially during long storage periods. It will accelerate exhaust pipe corrosion.
A simple heat shield mounted parallel to the lower surface of the floor and about 2 or 3" below it will accomplish the same goal. Or if you do not wish to attach anything to the floor then fabricate curved angle brackets that will clamp to the exhaust pipe and bolt to the fabricated shield.

I put several coats of Eastwood high temp manifold paint on before I wraped it. If you drive it frequently the heat will remove any moisture.
