welt rivets

ok guys trying to install the welting for the grill and the hood rest supports. the rivets are alittle stronger than i thought. whats a good way to bend these rivets over with common tools?. thxs

I used a small 1" C-clamp and ground the fixed pad into a shallow "V". Then I took a thin scrap of wood and put it over the rivet head , the "V" into the split and tightened down until the rivet started to spread. Then you can finish it with a pair of channel locks.

Same sort of thing but i modified an old set of small c-clamp
vicegrips with a v on 1 tong and an indent on the other.
You'll have better results with the grille on the bench and the
headlite buckets removed for better access. Find the center of the
welt and start there, working 1 side then the other as you proceed,
trimming the ends if necessary when done. Worked for me..

Yup pain in the rear...local simple tools Flat screw driver and a pair of channel lock pliers wrapped with electrical tape over the tips. Use the screw driver to put between the split in the rivit once through the hole. twis t the screw driver to start to open the rivet. the with the flat of the driver flaten one side then the other so it is spread way open then used the channel lock pliers to crush the two tangs flat! worked great for me even over the lip of the rad/grill. I just made a simple tool out of steel and drilled 2 holes and cut in half. Then used a set of channel locks to pinch the rivet and all together. I found it helped to slightly start the curl with needle nose b4 crimping it. Makes a nice almost stock looking crimp.
