M38A1 Military canopy to a civilian windshield frame.

Post by Phil4280 »

Hi there!

I am curious how well would a military canopy for a M38A1 fit a civilian/repro winshield frame, being the civilian windshield frame is some 7/16" lower in the top arch of the frame compared to a original M38A1 frame and the roap channel is accordingly a flatter curve to the same extent.

The 55 to 67 CJ5 windshield is the same size as the M38A1 windshield. I installed a civvy best top on my A1 years ago using the military windshield channel so I see no reason the A1 military top would not fit the civvy channel. The original civvy Willys top was the same heavy canvas as the military top. Your repop must be off sized or you must have a later (electric wipers at bottom) windshield frame.

well I have a M38A1 frame as well as a repro and a CJ5 circa 1964 mfg one. Both the repro and the 1964 one are top wiper as per the M38A1. Glass etc is all the same size and possition in the frame but the M38A1 is approx 10mm or 7/16" higher in the middle at the top. As well the roap channel has a sharper curve in the M38A1 one where the other two are a flatter curve.
