and my gas level sender just stopped working. I can't really measure gas consumption by the miles, since my speedo is reading wrong. I was going to fill up the jerry can just in case. I cleaned it out with fresh gas, but some of the paint on the bottom is flaking off, and I can't get all of it. Is there a fuel filter that will catch some of the flakes, or am I better off not using it?

1-Use your GPS to determine range and fuel stops.

2-Use a clean white cloth over the gerry can nozzle when you pour gas from it.

Thanks Wes, I didn't even think of that!

Hey Wes, for in the future, what can I use to clean out the inside of that gas can?

Depends on what material is in it. You said you were getting paint flakes which is odd since no one in their right mind would paint the inside of any gas container. But if it's paint then use paint stripper. Any of the commercial tank interior cleaning products will do the job. Or just take her to a shop and have it hot tanked. A gerry can should not have any coatings done to the interior. No matter what hype a tank Renuzit guy gives you the best route is bear metal and keep the can full of gas.

Are you using a jerry can made for potable water? Water cans (I have a couple) have a tan coating on the inside and a larger lid held on by a clamp. One of my water cans was used by a PO for gas and the coating is peeling off. Fuel jerry cans have a smaller screw in type lid and no coating as mentioned.

I use a tractor gas tank funnel with a screen in the
bottom for my 1948 Ford N. Most farm supply stores
should have them.

It's a gas can, but the inside is coated with something. I have no idea what, or why you would do that.
