Recently saw an auction for a NOS MV choke cable with outer conduit of 35" and inner cable/wire of 38".

What are the correct choke cable dimensions for the M38A1?

That's a one size fits all m vehicles cable control.

Even the correct M38A1 listing in the more modern -20P ignores the original A1 control WO # 806333 / ORD# 8329760 and lists FSN 2910-00-322-7206 which is based on the earlier M38 round knob throttle control WO# 801683, ORD# 7375115 which is 23" overall length.

I would suspect any control offered for sale with a manufacturing date of 1953 or newer would most likely be the generic replacement for the original.

None of the parts manuals give a length.

Thanks for the response , Wes. Is it relatively easy to "trim-to-length" these one size fits all choke cables? The choke cable that was on this A1 was completely different from any MV cable, so I have no sample for comparison.

Yes they are simple to fit. You install the control in the dash with it's conduit routed to the carb. You clamp the end in the carb once you insure adequate clearance between the control conduit and adjacent parts and enough slack for engine movement. Then you withdraw the knob and wire enough to insure the end of the wire is removed from the area of the conduit that you are cutting off. Leave only a little stretch (about 1/4") of conduit sticking out of the carb clamp and cut the conduit off and confirm that the swing of the choke arm to close the choke does not strike the end of the exposed conduit. There should be at least 1/4" of space left there. Now slowly feed the wire back into the conduit and feed the end of the wire through the wire stop. With the wire pushed full in at the dash and the choke wide open, slide the wire back out 1/8" from the dash. Now tighten the lock screw on the wire stop. Leave about 1" of wire extending through the wire stop and cut the rest off.
