hook up with the M38A1 trailer plug receptacle? As in, if I get one for my M38A1, do I have to modify it?

Yes the plug will fit. The only issue using the M416 is that it's wheels and the M38A1 wheels are different and do not interchange so you will need to carry a spare for the trailer or change the M416 wheels to two M38A1 wheels. The track width on the M416 is also a tad wider then the M38/M38A1.

How about the M100 trailer Wes? If he has the 1952 M38A1, the M100 would be more correct for his vintage. Will those wheels work on the A1?

The M100 came with the M38/M38A1 wheel and was designed to be used with the M38/M38A1 and has the same track width.
Both the M100 and the M416 use a 5 on 5.5" lug pattern. The problem with the M416/M151 wheel is that it will not fit over the front hub on an M38/M38A1 or M100's only hub. But the M38/M38A1/M100 wheel has the larger center hole and fits on the M416 just fine. Wheel offset is also different.
From the late 60's on any remaining M38A1's in service would usually not be able to find any M100 trailers to tow. Thus the M416 was a common sight behind the M38A1 in those later service years.
