Wiper Valve

On my M38A1, the wiper valve seems to have a problem but is not easily serviceable. When installed as the book shows, lever down and in the straight down position, the valve is closed and no air passes through. When I turn the valve to the right, towards the incoming vacuum source, that side opens up as expected but I do not get any vacuum to the other side. Instead, as I blow through the right side, I get air escaping through the valve body.

The lever does not feel loose and I tried running a thin wire through the valve in the open position but cannot get it through and cannot get any evidence of debris. As there is not a diagram of the valve in the books, I am not sure if I have an obstruction or not and just how the valve operates.

It seems like a simple control and I did not want to knock out the rivet holding it together if that is not necessary. I was thinking maybe I could drill a hole through to the other side when it is in the open position. But I might still have a vacuum leak in the housing unless I can tighten the rivet to seal it. Has anyone dealt with this little device before or had one apart?

The valve is either full open (flow unrestricted between the inlet and outlet ports) or full closed (No flow between the inlet and outlet ports). Those valves are fairly easy to come by. Jonathan was selling them NOS a while back.

Okay. Thanks Wes. I will get a little more aggressive with it and see if I can get thru with a probe or drill. Will also check with Jon at Midwest to see if he still has them. I need a couple other items anyway.

Just to follow up, I sent an email to Jon and he no longer has these. I will check with the regular suppliers if I cannot repair mine. But thanks for the recall and info.

Just one more bit of info. Jon emailed me that there was one advertised on EBAY. I looked and found a guy who has them NOS. The listing said he had seven and five (now six) have been sold. If you need one, better act quick. $20.00 plus $3 shipping.
