M38a1 Fuel pump issue

I am installing a fuel pump on my M38a1 and the left bolt hole in the engine block has been drilled and tapped for a 3/8 inch bolt, but is only threaded for about 1/4 to 3/16 inch (and not well done either). I would like to tap it a bit deeper into the engine block but cannot tell if the hole goes through to the internal part of the engine (engine is in vehicle). I have probed the hole with a wire and it does not seem to go through - the wire goes in close to one inch depth. Does anyone know if the left hole is a dead end (bottom tap) or if it goes through? I really don't want to get metal shavings inside the engine.

Thanks

The front hole is blind and is only 3/4" deep. I would guess the threaded length in the hole is 1/2" to 7/16". Are you using the correct long hex head special bolts and the correct spacer?

I don't have an original fuel pump or bolts - I bought a single action pump to use until I find and can afford an original.

Then be sure to limit the length of your mount bolts to penetrate the block no more than 1/2". You do not use the M series vacuum/fuel pump spacer with the civvy single action pump.
