Frame Questions

Post by Xamon »

Okay was going over my donor frame to see what was still usable and found a tag. Seems the guy did not know what this was from. Anyways it is a CJ-2A 92047. Just wondering if the bits are still compatible, The front crossmember which is a biggy appears to measure correctly. What about the battery tray and the spring shackles? I need to replace my passenger front and was hoping to use the one off this frame. As long as these parts will work then all is good. Lots of rivets to grind and welds to cut though.
Just so you know the frame is pretty shot, it has been straightened and reinforced had the rear set of the front spring shackles removed with that part of the frame.

The CJ frames had a long evolution period with at least 5 changes from CJ2A 1945 thru CJ3A 1953. The primary differences to concern you are the bumper attachment, the spring pivot brackets, the battery tray is higher and the missing voltage regulator tray and missing inside frame boxing from bumper to firewall. I believe the steering bellcrank shaft receptacle on the 2A frame is smaller than the M38 as well.

The steering gear is gone off the donor but I have the original for the M38 anyways. I will have to see about the battery tray, it had the second mounting/plate/tray behind the battery one that was just bolted on. I will have to dig out my shackles and see if they work with the pivots. Oh and by donor I mean it is getting cut up to fix the M38 one. Need to pick up another grinding wheel for all the rivets.
Was it usual to weld the inside join of the engine mounts to the frame? nasty place to cut a weld.
Has anyone done the measurements of the tray so I can check?
There are several modifications to this frame, reinforcements welded to the outside and underside.

The steering bellcrank on the crossmember is what I referred to.

The battery tray assembly from the 2A frame is too high for the M38. If you use it the front battery box will not fit under the hood.

The shackles and shackle brackets are the same. It is the pivot brackets at the rear end of the front springs and the front end of the rear springs I referred to being different.

Yes I understood the Steering bit, it is gone off the cj frame but present on the m38.
How much too high is the tray? I am not above modifying as it seems to be a hard to get part.
Good good, it is front front passenger that needs the fix. Gonna dig out the parts to test anyways I have them bagged and tagged.
Thanks for the info Wes.
