Does anyone have a picture of the seat cushion set up for a m38a1?? all I have is the seat frame of tubing and cross channels. Is there suppose to be a metal pan or are the seat on plywood with foam or are they on springs? any clues would be helpful thank you.

Check out the photo on this post:

That's off an M38, but the M38A1 is the same setup. Here's an aftermarket seat pan:

Those two lugs slide under the rearmost cross channel, and the two welded nuts line up with the holes in the front cross channel.
On top of those springs is about an inch of horsehair, and the seat cover fits over; it's secured in place by bending over those little triangular cutouts you can see around the perimeter of the pan in that second weblink.
Some vendors are selling replacement seat covers packed with foam and secured to plywood bases; you just screw them through the existing holes in your cross channels. Not original, but a lot cheaper than NOS spring sets.
Here's some photos of my seat base as I took the rotten canvas off:

thank you thats what I was wondering, I think I'll go with the plywood and foam route I don't want to try and hunt down springs. anyone else with info is also welcome thanks again,

Brent Mullins has the springs. $50 each though.
You could just get some repro metal pans & use the foam with them. Most vendors have them, and from the outside the seats would look no different to original.
