A few tire mounting questions.

1.Were flaps used on our 16 inch rims? My rims are smooth and in good shape that I am thinking no.

2.Do you need those valve stem guards? Stock?

3.The red dot that is placed on the tire, does that sit on the same edge of the rim as the valve or is that supposed to go 180* to the opposing side?

My NDCC's have flaps and they're a pain to mount/dismount.
Did the tire fairy pay you a visit??

Red dot goes with the valve stem position. Yes they came with flaps to protect the tube from sharps edges and chaffing. Chaffing and sticking of the tube to the wheel can cause a tube failure as well as punctures. Don't forget to use tire talc between all rubber parts.

My preference when the wheels are in good shape IE corrosion free with no air leak paths and have safety beads I will usually go with tubeless tires.

I thought flaps were for split rims and rough rims. Always something......
Wes, are you saying to try the NDCC's tubless or is that with a radial tire? My rims are in great shape.

According to TM9-1870-1, Care and Maintenance of Pheumatic Tires, Feb 1955; flaps are only used only flat based rims* but then figure 16 clearly shows them being used on "Military Rims" and "divided rims" along with bead clips. And paragraph 17 states that "Tire flaps must be used in conjunction with bead clips." Note" Bead clips can only be used with tires marked "BL" on the sidewalls" (para 17).

Hmmm. para 9b, Controlled-Bead Tires states that " Only tires with controlled (width) beads can be used with beadlocks or with bead clips. Tires with controlled beads have the letters BL or BLX imprinted on the sidewalls near the size markings on the serial number side. Combat tires and tactical tires have controlled beads, even when they are not marked BL or BLX."

* Paragraph 14. Tire Flaps states that "Flaps are required in tires used on flat based rims, to protect the tubes from the toes of the beads and from the bases of rims and from the bead-clps for protection from the edges of clips."

Same TM, para 9d, Balance Mark "A small red mark, approximately one-quarter inch in diameter, on the sidewall near the bead of some tires indicates where the valve of the tube should be placed in order to effect best balance of tire and tube."[/i]

All true. The M38 wheel with the safety bead does not require a flap.

Those without safety beads are the so called flat wheel where the tire's bead edge can pinch the tube require flaps. These are usually CJ wheels or 60's & up civvy replacement wheels sold to the military.

The use of a flap does not mandate the use of bead clips or lock rings but the use of lock rings and/or bead clips usually requires the use of flaps.

This is an old fart who mounted hundreds of flap equipped wheels in the 50's and 60's.

My rims are the type with the bead lock or safety rim/bead. They are smooth and clean on the inside. I gather it should be ok then to not use the flaps.?.?.?

If they have the raised bump safety bead near the flange on each side yes. Bead Locks are a different animal entirely.

okay wow. Not often I have no clue what is being talked about.
Could I trouble you for diagrams etc for what all this is. not sure what flaps are etc. Grew up with modern tires with a bead so this is new info.

Ya I shouldn't of said the words bead lock. Just the bumps as you state Wes.

Xamon, Google tire flaps and you will understand. It on the same lines of a rim strip as you see on a bicycle rim/tire. Protects the tube from the rim.

Modern tires and old tires have beads. Not so for the wheels. Some wheels (mostly newer) have safety bead seats in them and some (mostly older) do not.
