M38 Pedal assembly

Post by dayboy42 »

Hi guys,

I am putting the pedal assembly together today and I see that the parts book only lists one washer.

Seems to me like their should be two more where I have the arrows at. What do you think?

Those washers should be 502242. One is listed on page 56, the other on page 253. I only see two listed, but I believe there should be three. Check out this photo in Wes's "M38 Frame" album:

Thank you Owen!

Most of the time I can figure this stuff out with the books but sometimes they are not so clear.

I spend more time looking for missing hardware that previous owners have lost and I can't tell you how many things I have found assembled wrong.

Thanks again!

The answers are in the M38 ORD 9. Page 50, figure 02-2 clutch linkage shows the three washers but only lists the single washer PN 502242 which you have mistakenly ID'd as 834550 (this part is the felt washer that seals the pedal shaft hole in the floor.). This single washer is adjacent to the clutch pedal. The brake section is Page 240, figure 12-6 which is not as clear and there they list in section 1206 the old washer number 7372837 and the new # 502242 but they erred in listing only one.

If after you assemble the complete shaft assembly you still have a wee bit too much lateral play Willys issued a kit to service that problem but you can fabricated the parts yourself to address the issue as well.
