the data plates are almost impossible to read, i can see M100 model and that is about it. what is the best way to clean off the data plates without messing them up?

Nice looking trailer! You can try fingernail polish remover. Don't leave it on for long to start until you see how well it is going to work (if it does). If you need it to start on a while, you can soak a paper towel with remover. You are just looking to soften the old paint so that you can scrape it off with a plastic scraper or something similar. If polish remover doesn't work, graduate up to thinner or mineral spirits. I would stay away from paint remover on plates, and don't use sand paper or wire brushes.

DOT 3 brake fluid is the old reliable paint lifter for gentle metals.

im trying both nail polish remover and brake fluid. the date area is legible and it says 5 51.

not sure, it's the bit that says CAR# that makes me ask.

my plates dont look like the one in that thread. i contacted the guy i got it from, he said that the numbers are just from the estate sale he got it from. it was with a m38a1.

I wondered if it was something like that. Doesn't hurt to check though. :)
It is a very nice trailer, looks very complete.
