Axle Ratio tags

I have the original axle ratio tags and bendix joint tags and was wondering if the axle ratio tags started out not painted green. I am assuming they were but just looking for clarification. I saw pictures of the joint tags here on a restored jeep and mine had the normal years of grim on them but showed no sign of ever being green. The ratio tags were to dirty to tell and I havent had luck referencing a picture.

I saw that thread awhile back and that is where I was referencing the bendix joint tags. The only pictures that would load were the of the blue axle and the initial manual picture. Still having issues with most of the pictures loading but the one you posted with the three tags is now showing up. :? It looks as though they werent painted green from your picture.

Thank you

Yeah no paint on mine that I could detect, the ones on the blue axle got painted silver if I remember right.

Probably depended on who did the service repaint and how thorough they were. Just guessing mind you.

A word of caution. You guys are asking about US built jeep in Maryland and and have M38 Canadian folks answering. There may be some minor painting process differences between Willys and Ford of Canada.

The US frames were delivered to Willys in flat black but the axles coming from spicer I am not sure of.

Thats a very good point. Thank you.

Either way its a very very small aspect of the jeep. I am just going to assume that since the other tags werent painted I will do the same for the axle ratio tag. If I find out differenet I can always paint it.

This is true, although everything on my axles indicates they were made by spicer, but they did I think have a factory in Canada as some parts are marked spicer, some are spicer Canada, and some are spicer USA. With all of the factory records from ford Canada destroyed by the Canadian military it is pretty much impossible to know exactly how the Canadian ones came from the factory or where all of the parts came from.
