Engine model year
I realize this topic is beat to death but I am trying to determine what year my engine is in the 1953 M38A1 jeep I am trying to restore. From what I gather from my reading is that my engine must be a replacement engine but I can’t figure out the year. The engine serial number is R1MD51361 any help in identifying this engine would be of great help to me. ~Kelly

This must be a typo. RMD 51361 would be the 41, 360th Military F134 built. The serials were in sequence regardless of weather it was an MDXXXXX or RMDXXXXX. If you look at the current M38A1 database there are very few engine serials and without the contract data on how many became RMD's and how many RMD's were built and during what periods it is tough to guess a date for your engine accurately. A wag or wild arse guess would be that serial may have been on about a MD30000 range serial if it were an MDXXXXX.R1MD51361

Thank you Wes, I have enjoyed viewing your responses in all forums and appreciate your knowledge and expertise. I will continue to gather as much information as I can as I continue my restoration and I hope to be able to contribute to this site and others as I gain more knowledge along the way. Without the combined efforts of everyone I realize this project would take me an incredibly long time to complete. ~Kelly
