Hello: on the back of the transmission there is a drive gear that is held on by a washer , nut, and cotter pin. Access to it is thru the transfer case rear cover.

Question. The nut on my assembly can be turned by hand once the cotter pin was removed. Is this correct? or is nut supposed to be tightened to a specific torque?

before you try removing the transfer case you need to remove top of transmission and wire the main gear in place or it will slide back and drop all your needle bearings into the case...... Don't ask me how I know this.
