have the same problem i have? keeping od paint old the muffler. ive tried everything i can think of. tried several brands of high heat primer, then painted with red oxide primer, then od. nothing seems to want to stay on.

does anyone has a solution?

I've never wasted my time painting a muffler on any vehicle I drive. Heat cooks the paint off always. If you want a muffler to stay pretty then go with a stainless steel unit.

no need for the muffler to look pretty wesk, just the primer and paint to stay on.

The toughest finish for mufflers and headers that I have seen is called "Jet-Hot coat". It is a ceramic-based coating that is applied to bare metal. It is kinda expensive I think. See this website for offered colors: http://www.jet-hot.com/coatings/premium-colors/

Colors 2006, 2027, and 2053 look closest to olive drab. If you want to get something that will last and don't mind spending a little bit, this is certainly the coating you should get. I have seen 15+ year old coatings that still hold up fine. It lowers the heat transfer to surrounding components under the hood as well.


I should add: you do NOT need to paint this coating...

My point was most of us don't waste our time putting paint on them in the first place.

I understand that, but it seemed like circleburner wanted to have the manifold stay OD and I just thought I would point out this coating as an alternative to painting which would be a lasting solution.

I was responding to Mike's post. I don't see any problem with your post. That's great stuff and looks great on trailer queens that are set up with mirrors so the crowds can see how pretty the show girls look! I just don't see the need for any paint on a driver muffler. They normally corrode from the inside out so the more you drive the less life you will realize on the muffler.

thxs rcflyguy, for the info i might look into that product.

wesk, i dont drive my jeep everyday, the paint staying on the muffler is really not that important if i did. but i do take the jeep to car and jeep shows sometimes and would rather not have a rusty muffler hanging underneath.

Mike,

I understand now that she's a show jeep mostly. That's fine but I would still go with a stainless muffler. There is no absolute evidence that mufflers from the factory or off the Army parts shelf were ever painted OD or any color.
