Horn issue

Horn issue
So my horn quit working yesterday. (1952 m38) in looking in a previous post, I saw one that had the little screw in the middle. Mine is missing that so is it broke or do I just need to find alittle screw. The flat round washer is just laying on the nut. Thanks John jr

Isn't the M38 horn just like the 'a1? If it is, there should be a horn switch screwed into the end of the steering gear. Inside the column, there should be a 1/8" rod that runs through the middle of the shaft. There is a mushroom shaped button that screws on top of the rod. The button sits about 1/16" or slightly more above the steering wheel nut. There is a rubber horn button cap that attaches to the steering wheel nut.

Horn
I have a flat type washer screwed onto the rod that looks like there could have been something screwed into it that lays flat on the steering wheel nut. I also have the rubber boot. Didnt see anything in Wes pictures. Thanks

At the bottom of your steering gear box should be a switch with two wires. Item D in the illustration below.

The rod "QQ" below actuates the switch. It has a washer "PP" threaded to the top end and then a ring "NN" sets on that and it is all retained by the nut "AA". The bottom of the rod passes through the guide tube "M" and actuates the switch "A".

The last few months of M38 production used the same type rubber horn button as the M38A1 by employing a new style nut with ring groove top outer for the rubber boot to snap into.
The illustration below is the early M38 hard button from the early M38 ORD 9 SNL G-740 dated Nov 51

So if you have an early M38 column then the illustration above is what you will have. If you have the later rubber button you will have the same parts above except for the nut which uses that late ring grooved nut and the add on rubber cover for the nut.
