m38 hot water heater

Post by Bill_F »

A friend of mine has an original m38 hot water heater, he also picked up a heater out of an m151. That is when he noticed that both heaters are basically the same other than the output. I have now installed in m151 heater in my m38 in the same location as the original m38 hot water heater. The only mod I made to the m151 heater was to make it so the output pointed straight up. To do this I had to re-drill 4 holes in the the blower housing but htat was not hard to do. Excuse the dirt and missing paint on my jeep, it gets used a lot.

Now the for a question, what data plate would have gone on my glove box door, you can see the holes in the photos.

Bill,

There weren't any specified in TB9-2855-37 (The heater installation TB ) for the glove box door.

Elias,

All the info you need about your heater system can be found here:

I am just wondering what might have been on my glove box door at some point.

I originally thought maybe your jeep had had a tow bar at one time because the "Caution Tandem Operation" data plate is placed on the glove box door. But I measured my data plate and it is 3" X 4" and your spacing appears to be larger than that.

I saw an M38 a while back with a "property of USMC" tag on the glovebox door; a lot smaller than the holes in your photo though. Maybe the USAF fitted something similar, but on a bigger scale?

Of course the area mapped out by those four holes would be very large for a property tag. Could have been a large tag with some kind of instructions or it could have been for some kind of carrying bracket that may even have been on the inside of the door.

Bill,

I found the occupant of those four holes in your glove box door.

That could be. My jeep does not show signs of having it installed but since it had a hard top on it it is possible.

Here is what a stock m38 heater looks like. This is mounted in my friends jeep.
