ok started on our M38 restoration, 4 wheels now on and it rolls, redid valves, and general work on engine (still need many parts to complete, did a quick check got it to fire and start, enough with that), found someone close by who had a engine that ran but not well, picked it up, its on a stand right now, here are some numbers taken off of it:

Engine main block Data plate:
Red but badly worn:
CJ2A
905979
RJ-291957

stamp on block (above water pump) RJ291957 (hay it matches the data plate)

on Driver side Low rear (in casting) 12T 4-6 F

Passenger side Low on casting 804380-W-12-D-PS CU CR

On engine head (not sure if correct head)
Jeep Willy's 1-23 W5 640161
Tapet Clearance Intake 14, Exhaust 14

Exhaust manifold (some of this is hard to make out in casting) 4-659 (Not sure about first "4")

so the main pulley with nut has been welded together, so cannot easily pull off the nut, is this a chain drive or gear drive (I think gear drive)?
It is a double pulley on the bottom, but water pump has more of a deep MB single pulley on it.

Any ideas or info would be great!

We are off to pull the water pump off now as it seems there is a bearing gone in it (can feel when turn over by hand there is a slight wobble)

thanks for all your help!

804380 was the next to last L134 casting used. It was used from about early 1952 through about 55. The R in the serial RJ291957 represents a factory new replacement engine for a CJ. The plate that is installed with drive nails is usually a rebuild plate from a local engine shop and has nothing to do with the fact the engine was a new replacement from the factory. The crank shaft double pulley, is it two narrow pulleys or one wide and one narrow?
