Does anyone know about PTO winches?

I have a Ramsey 200L. Engaging the PTO drive unit is no problem. The winch itself has a clutch lever however. Sometimes this moves very easy, locking the PTO drum in with the driveshaft. Most of the time, it doesn't, moving maybe a quarter of an inch side to side but not far enough to engage. i have had the whole thing running great before, but the clutch lever is always very picky on whether it wants to shift or not.

It is the way it is set up. Nothing wrong with your winch. The parts will only slide together a certain way and unless it is lined up it will not engage.

Try rolling the cable drum a few inches each direction while operating the handle.

That was it Wes. To roll the drum, I had to run the PTO, and jiggle the lever until it would catch. I tried both forward and reverse, and it worked every time. If I didn't set the PTO to running, and would toggle it back and forth to no use. Is this normal?

Normal ops is to select the drum lever to the desired position first and then engage the PTO. Makes for some interesting problems now and then when you don't have any helpers. Which is why the electric winch became so popular with it's handy electric remote located right there with the drum.

While we are on the winch the winch subject could someone please tell me the chain specs on the end of the cable like length, size, grade, and typ of hook.

The answers are right there in your ORD 9 SNL G-741 parts manual on pages 314 & 315. If you don't have an ORD 9 for your M38 then go to our downloads page and download your PDF copy free.
The only spec not in there is the length or how many links of chain.
If you count those in the parts manual illustration it comes out to about 28 showing and I'd estimate 21 not showing. Then the master link (called a repair link in the parts manual ) ORD PN 7717021 at each end of the chain. Most estimates place the length of chain at 4 feet.

Can the clutch lever be pulled out, swapped, and put back in on the reverse side of the winch? Right now it is on the front, and prevents me from fabricating a military winch mount. I have seen this done, so i guess my question would be more of a "do I need to disassemble the winch to do this, or can I just pop it out and switch it".
