Well...I seem to have a similar problem. I recently acquired an M38A1 and it is running (now) and has new brakes, etc. However, part of the easy process is checking/changing all fluids. I drained the transfer case (bottom plug), and refilled (via the side plug on the passenger side of the case). Almost half of what I put in proceeded to leak out up behind the emergency brake hub. It's definitely the 30-80W gear oil. Any idea what the seal p/n is that I need and/or how difficult it might be to replace?

Hello Craig,
I split your post from the rear engine oil seal post you tagged it on to because they are very unrelated leaks.
The transfer output shafts both use the same seal and gaskets and are treated much the same. The parking brake R&R is a separate issue and is covered quite well in the manuals. As a rule most general component R&R's are covered in TM 9-8014. However detailed sub-component R&R and repairs/overhauls are covered in the TM 9-8015-1 for engine/clutch issues and TM 9-8015-2 for chassis and running gear issues. You can download PDF's of these manuals free from our downloads page. Try to have your manuals handy, refer to them often and ask for help here when their process confuses you or does not seem to be covered there.
For tranny and transfer issues always utilize TM 9-8014, TM 9-8015-2 and Rick Stiver's two rebuild guides.

Tranny:

Try to purchase only new manufacture modern seals and gaskets. Note that the splined shafts of both output shafts must be sealed within the splined yoke with RTV or similar stay soft sealant. It's all covered in the books and guides.

The p/n's don't help much nowadays with most auto parts places, but I know Pete Debella has them, having bought 3 from him. Three because I put one in backwards (it don't work)
