Nice find!
This period photo (many thanks to Wes & his photo album!) suggests the one in your photo could be authentic:
Owen
1951 US Air Force M38
1944 F-1 1/2-ton Airdrome Trailer
1940 C15 Chevrolet CMP 11-cab
1939 DKW KS200 Motorcycle
MVT # 19406

Hi Max,
the marking on the hood will be authentic, but will the rest of the vehicle too?
I have seen many Jeeps put together from others.

It certainly looks to be a complete M38 jeep. If blue is found on the rest of the body it would be safe to assume it was an original USAF jeep most likely surplussed out at a base in Europe or England.
Do you have any complete photos of the dash and/or closeups of the original US data plate set?

Hi Wes:
yes it was surplused out in Germany.
Have to ask the seller for further info.
