I am getting ready to start body work on the M-38A1 I acquired a few years ago. Starting on the passenger side, replacing sheet metal and filling holes (lots of little holes from things attached by POs, mud skirts and top are my guess)...

I am not familiar with M-38A1s as I am with M-38s... Question is on the M-38 there is a panel and reinforcement inside the wheel well behind the tire; is there supposed to be a similar one on the passenger side of the M-38A1? I have looked at some photos in the Members Galleries and have not found a photo of the area under the wheel well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated... I need to know if I need to order a part to replace something missing...

dont think so! if there is I haven't seen or read anything about it when I was bringing my a1 back too original.

The inner brace in the rear passenger side fender well of the M38 was there to support the side spare tire mount - a leftover from its CJ3A origins. The purpose built and designed M38A1 had no provisions for mounting the tire on the side of the vehicle and thus no need for the brace. There is a bolted in sheet metal shield in the drivers side rear fender well of both the 38 and A1 to protect the trailer socket wiring harness from wheel-thrown debris.

It would be interesting to hear from our Canadian members. Particularly those with the 68 to 72 M38A1 CDN2 and 3 which were built long after the CJ5 entered production. Do any of your CDN2's and 3's have the four side spare mount holes and the brace panel?

If you are talking about passenger side, vertical part of fender well? If so on my M38A1cnd3 (1971) yes there are 4 holes and a reinforcing brace. I will post a couple pics on my member photo album. My photos are on page 12 (I can't figure how to put a picture into my reply. Sorry I'm technically challenged)

Amen to that. Less than pleased would be an understatement.

This uneven "U" shaped brace was located in both wheel wells of the a1 I've been working on....its kinda hard to make it out as it was mostly rusted out on my body.....but that flat part to the left in the pic was attached to the vertical wall of the wheel house.....bend 90 degrees to support the top of the wheel house and then bent another 90 degree back down and attached to the sidewall of the tub just to the rear of the wheel location.

My M38 has a vertical stamped metal web spot-welded onto the tub that fits between the inner and outer fender plus a wood-filled hat channel that runs back to front incorporating two of the holes that would support the spare tire mount. The M38A1 has a upside down U-shaped brace for the fender like in idiocrates' pic. I don't think that brace is stiff enough to support a spare tire mount on an A1, I think its just there to support the fender.
