Porkchop's Clutch Arm problem

Hey guys,

Could really use some advice. Had a little problem trying to reassemble the clutch arm to the pedal shaft assembly on Porkchop (my '52 M38A1). I've described the issue and included pictures for easier understanding on my ongoing blog http://jmetz.com/2014/04/25/willys-jeep ... m-problem/.

Anyone have an idea of what I should do?

That thingy that came off is called a key, they are done like that in rotating assemblies in theory to hold them aligned and so it will shear before anything else is damaged should things jam. just pop it back in.

I had hoped that's what it is. Does it need to be welded/glued/otherwise secured?

That is called a woodruff key.
It is not intended to shear but just hold things in place & alignment plus rotate with the shaft that the pedal becomes part of when everything is assembled properly.
When you tighten the bottom pedal clamping bolt that is what locks everything in place.
No other locking material etc. is needed.
