Had a noise and vibration in first gear when moveing with the clutch in last fall. Took out tranny and and had it gone over by a local machanic who does good work. Tranny runs great, vibration gone, but when Im slowing down with the clut.ch in I get a tick. tick, tick sound It sounds like its coming from the tranny area but looking under the jeep I could not find anything loose. Anybody have any idea what it could be, its driving me nuts...

While the tranny was out did you take advantage of the easy access and have a mechanic go though the clutch system?

Then that is the place to start looking. Pull the inspection plate and get your ear up at the hole and listen for the tick. Could be a release finger on the pressure plate, a loose return spring, or bad release bearing among other things. If you ascertain it's not from inside the bell housing then jack up one rear wheel (and one front wheel if the tick was in 4WD). Put the clutch tranny and transfer where they were when you heard the tick. Now spin the jacked up wheel or wheels both forward and reverse and see if you can locate the tick.

When I've replaced my clutch in the last year, on my M38, i had a problem with the clutch plate fingers, when i push the clutch pedal, the clutch bearing touch only a finger before the other fingers ( tick, tick, tick ). It was a first for me to have a pressure plate poorly adjusted. I have adjust in place through the opening. And now it is perfect.
