Oil Pumps

Hi,

I received my NOS oil pump in the mail today. I learned that there are two different oil pumps: the early style and the later style. The one that failed in my engine was the early kind and the NOS one I received is that later style.
2 questions:

1) Just to make sure - these can be used interchangeably, correct? In other words I can use the later style on my engine?

2) Please take a look at the pictures: I am pretty sure the NOS I received is damaged and has a piece broken out of it.

Thanks,

As I recall there are at least 3 versions of the pump. All three interchange. But make sure the gasket you use fits the pump. The pump driven gears differ in that the early chain drive engine cam gear is angled one way and the later gear drive cam gear engine is angled the other way.

Ryan's book lists two oil pumps on page 55.
Both pumps I have are gear driven.
I am still hoping for answer to my second question. In the second picture you can see that it looks like a piece broke out of the flat bottom, right between the mounting holes.
Is it broken?

I couldn't discern the condition based on your photos. Need a clearer and larger file photo.

I took two more pictures:

I am referring to the chipped out/broken off piece in the flat bottom.

Ok- so I realize that the bottom of the NOS pump I bought is in fact correct the way it is.

However, now I am even more confused as the pump that I pulled out of my M38 (red) looks more like a MB pump!?!
