I am preparing the A1 for tomorrows parade. I will be driving three WWII vets right behind the Color Guard.

I topped off the tranny with 90wt. Then, went over to the other side of the jeep, removed the transfer fill plug, and oil came gushing out the hole. Why is that?

I thought I read somewhere that there is a passageway between the tranny and transfer case which allows oil to intermix. Am I overfilling the transfer case by bringing the tranny oil level up to its plug? Should I let the oil drain to plug level in the transfer case?

Or, do I even have to ever check the oil level in the transfer? As long as the transmission oil is at plug level, I'm good to go?

I asked the same question in reverse. Apparently some don't share oil, so you are best to check them both.

My understanding is the older Willys units (before M38's and M38A1's) had some oil migration from the tranny to the lower height transfer. They are not suppose to share oil. You should always check the tranny and transfer. If the transfer filler plug dumps on you every time you open it then something isn't right and you better check the tranny oil level more often.
