I was just asked this question in a PM and I want to share it here where it can be read and learned from by everyone.
i just installed my clary flanges. with the flanges there were a spacer that looks like it would be installed over the splines. do i need these round spacer installed for the m38?
TB ORD 570 addresses their installation but it does not address the bushing placement or purpose.

Here you can see the bushing

Here is a photo (source unknown) with the bushing inserted on the end of the spline drive shaft.

Can anyone help with our member's question?

I believe the bushing is used for either the M38 or the MB/GPW to account for the different axle design. I am not sure which application uses the bushing.

I thought I was quite sure in my post above. The TB ORD 570 addresses it's installation in the M38 as well as 20 other vehicles.

The use of the bushing in the photo above on an M38 front axle would make no sense. But it's use behind the nut on an MB axle does make sense.
