M38 Excelerator pump issue?

I just got my jeep running. I just put new points, condenser, coil, cap and rotor. Along with a few new car parts. I have a carter WO on the jeep. I timed the engine to the ignition mark on the flywheel and even put a light on it. The jeep starts great and runs really smooth In the mid and top range. The issue I am having is the take off? I have a low end studder when I give it gas. I have to rev the engine pretty good and kinda slip the clutch to get it going. It feels like it wants to die if I don't. Once I get getting it runs really nice. When I shift and let off the throttle it will hesitate a little then goes good. I just put a new Excelerator pump in it and adjusted the fuel rod alittle. If I have the jeep in low range i never need to rev it up. I bought a full rebuild kit for the carb but just used a few parts. Think it's the carb? Timing still? Engine? I have no issue getting the carb rebuild by a pro? Any recommendations for a carb builder? Thanks a lot for and replys

The WO carb is an old fashioned easy to check in the barrel squirter type accelerator pump. So with the engine not running do you get a very easily heard and seen shot of raw gas into the throat of the carb when you pump the accelerator rod?

Ric's page has a great WO carb rebuild and basics page:
http://mightymo.org/Proj_Carter_WO_Rebuild.html

If you determine the the accelerator pump is working then check the mechanical (Centrifugal) advance of the distributor. With a timing light you should see the timing advance up to 11 degrees when you accelerate the engine.

Besides what Wes said, make sure the metering rod picks up out of the jet the moment the linkage advances off idle. Otherwise, there is no fuel at that point in time to run on. Your accelerator pump leather may be dry and a quick soak in vineager will expand it so it seals against the pump chamber. John

Not to draw you way from this site but if you were to end up getting the carb done by someone, look up Scoutpilot on the CJ2A page.
Nice Jeep btw.

Thanks for the replies guys. What I noticed with the accelerator pump is it doesn't seem like a steady squirt. Kinda chopped up and comes in alittle late I believe. I soaked the new pump in gas for awhile before installing. And it's been in the carb for a week now.

As mentioned above, did you soak the leather seal on the accelerator pump with oil?

If you viewed the web site on the WO Overhaul you would already be aware of these items that were mentioned.

Then and Now in MA did my carb and fuel pump. I thought they did a great job, big improvement. Just another option.

They did my fuel pump also. What the carb cost to do?

Iceman,
Before throwing time and money at the problem have you:

1-Soaked the accelerator pump seal in oil?

2-Checked to insure the centrifugal advance on the distributor works?

Either of the above can cause your problems and sorting those two items out won't cost you a couple hundred dollars.

I played with alittle more timing and it drives great. Thanks for the info...
