While replacing the rear cross member, I have noticed that that the old one has two holes for the pintle the new cross member has four holes , it came with a plate with four holes and the new cross member has four holes , is it for eyelets for the trailer hooks that was added at a later date Ryans book shows it with the four holes with plate Buzz

Ryans book on pages 134 & 135 show the normal M38 rear crossmember with two pintle mounting holes . The other two holes are in the drawbar brace assembly above the rear crossmember. The reinforcing plate that welds to both the upper drawbar reinforcing "V" and the rear crossmember has four holes. two align with the top two in the Drawbar reinforcing "V" and the lower two align with the two in the crossmember.

From what Ihave read, you are correct. The other 2 are used for eyelets for the tow chains.

What extra holes? All I have seen had 6 holes in the reinforcement plate. Two holes in the rear crossmember and 4 holes in the "V" drawbar.

I think what is happening is that the reproductions have six holes in the reinforcing plate. My M-38A1 frame has a reproduction / replacement rear cross member on it and it has 6 holes...
then again I have an A1 to look at, my M-38 was not factory and had a piece of channel as a rear cross member ...
Will post a photo later today...

There isn't room on the stock crossmember for 6 holes. Two holes are above the crossmember in the drawbar.

Original pintle mounting holes on 52 M38 frame.

These repop kits came in several versions with several hole combinations from 4 to 6 to 8 as well as the big hole and several different shape plates.
