Primer

Post by 93vetteguy »

Can you cover one brand of Primer with another brand of Primer? I sprayed Rapco 111 Primer on some parts and need to sand them out and will need to reprime as I may go down to the metal. I don't think I will get the spray gun out this weekend and hoped I could just touch up with a can of Rustoleum. Thanks!

I think Rustoleum is an oil based alkyd Enamel. I find it works well but drys slow. Some top coats will tend to crack it up or even blister it if the solvents used in the primers are not compatible. It is best to use products that are known to be compatible. If it does crack or blister up, you will need to go to bare metal and restart.

Had an old M38A1 rolling chasis I had to put out under the shelter for a while to make room in my shop, I wire brushed the frame and painted with Rustoleum I had around and when I ran out sprayed on some other left over paint and the base paint cracked and checked up. I will protect it until I restore it anyway.

I have been restoring an M-38A1 and have been using both Rustoleum and an Epoxy Primer and have had no problems with Gillespie enamels thinned with Xylene adhering to the primer.

I have had no bubbles or orange peeling to date... I will admit the rustoleum is used primarily on small parts (Bumperettes and such).

I keep the coats thin and let them set over night to be sure they are dry...

Hope this helps...

I would say that's the key, not to get impatient.

I like Rustoleum, good stuff, just don't try to rush it.
